Penetration Grade Bitumen by
Arta Energy Innovators (artaEI)
Penetration Grade Bitumen is a type of bitumen classified based on its hardness or consistency, which is measured by a test called the penetration test. In this test, a standard needle is allowed to penetrate the bitumen sample under controlled conditions (temperature, load, and time). The depth the needle penetrates is measured in tenths of a millimeter and determines the penetration grade.
Lower penetration numbers indicate harder bitumen, while higher numbers indicate softer bitumen. For example, bitumen with a penetration grade of 60/70 is harder than 80/100.
Penetration grade bitumen is widely used in road construction and asphalt pavements. Different grades are selected based on climate conditions and traffic load. Harder grades are suitable for hot climates and heavy traffic, while softer grades perform better in colder climates.
In summary, penetration grade bitumen provides a simple and reliable way to select bitumen based on performance needs, ensuring durability and proper pavement behavior.
